Do I get paid as a Cadet?
 

Cadets receive a training bursary.  The exact amount varies but it's usually between £750-£1000 per month.

Am I guaranteed a job when I finish?

This depends on the sponsor.  Some will require a Cadet to work with the company upon qualification, others won't. 

 

It's important to check what your sponsor's view on this is.

What is a sponsor?
 

A sponsor is an organisation that pays your bursary and tuition fees. 

 

These are often shipping companies but can sometimes be maritime charities. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

Can I choose my sponsor?
 

Watermark considers matching the right candidate with the right sponsor as the most crucial aspect of a successful cadetship.

 

Unlike some companies, we ensure that you know who your sponsor is before enrolling, even if it's not your choice. We don't leave it to chance.

How long does it take to qualify?

Typically around three years.  This depends academic performance as well as accumulating the right amount of sea time.

What does Watermark do?
 

Watermark is an MCA approved Training Provider for Cadets. We offer guidance, support, and mentorship throughout their training.

 

Our collaboration with colleges and sponsors ensures the success and well-being of the cadets.

What type of ships will I work on?

This again depends on the sponsor.  Some companies only operate one type of vessel. 

 

Despite only operating one, some companies prefer their cadets to work on multiple vessel types in order to get a good understanding of the industry.

What if I don't like being at Sea?

Working at sea is demanding yet highly fulfilling profession. We strive to communicate both the difficulties and advantages of a seafaring lifestyle during the hiring process.

 

If you have a change of heart after enrolling your sponsor may request reimbursement of fees.

What if I want to work ashore in the Maritime industry?

If you no longer want to work at sea, working on land is a common next step.

 

Some people transition to land immediately, while others continue to work at sea for a longer period of time. Our team can help guide you based on your career goals, so feel free to discuss them with us.

Which college will I attend?
 

Sponsors may require you to attend certain colleges.

It's not necessarily the one closest to you.
